In this latest edition of “Philly Unpacked” host Jordana Rubenstein guides us through the races on the ballot for the May 19 primary in Philadelphia.
WHYY’s politics reporter Carmen Russell-Sluchansky focused on the Democratic primary for the 3rd Congressional District, where state Sen. Sharif Street, state Rep. Chris Rabb and Dr. Ala Stanford are the front-runners and are running a hotly-contested race to succeed U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans who will be retiring after finishing his current term.
Angelique Hinton, executive director of PA Youth Vote, discusses the ways first-time and young voters are similar to and different from other voters. She says her organization was created because young people often feel political leaders are unresponsive to their concerns, and that can make them question if voting and participating would make a difference.
“We go into schools and try to connect dots for young people who do care a lot about issues, to the impact that participating in this process can have in addressing them,” Hinton said.
