Sulaiman Rahman is building pathways to power and making sure more people are prepared to walk through them.
In this Freedom Journeys story from WURD, Rahman shares how his upbringing between two very different worlds shaped his commitment to equity, access, and opportunity. Through initiatives like DiverseForce and its signature program, DiverseForce on Boards, he has helped train more than 400 leaders and place over 350 professionals on nonprofit boards across the region.
His work centers on a critical idea: representation alone is not enough. Real impact comes when diverse leaders are positioned to influence decisions, shape institutions, and drive long-term change.
Rahman also emphasizes the importance of social capital—the relationships, networks, and exposure that often determine who gets access to opportunity. By connecting Black and brown professionals to leadership pipelines, he’s working to ensure success isn’t left to chance. Researchers have found that social capital is one of the more powerful ways that people can improve their economic mobility and do better financially than their parents.
Freedom Journeys celebrates the lives of 250 phenomenal Philadelphians shaping culture, community, and the future.
